Biographie

Crew Stoneley was one of a number of outstanding Army quarter-milers in the early 1930s. He won the Army 440 y three times (1931-32, 1934) and at the AAA Championships he was the winner in 1932 and runner-up in 1934. A semi-finalist in the 1932 Olympic 400 and bronze medalist at the 1934 British Empire Games, he was also particularly successful as a relay runner. Stoneley was a member of the teams that set UK records for the 4×400 at the Los Angeles Olympics and the 4×440 y at the 1934 British Empire Games, where the team won the gold medal (with Rampling and the non-Olympians Denis Rathbone and Geoffrey Blake). Only fellow Army officer, Godfrey Rampling, was also a member of both teams. Commissioned in 1931, he rose to become the Colonel Commandant of the Royal Signals and retired from the Army in 1964 with the rank of Brigadier.

Personal Best: 440y – 48.7e (1934).
