Brian WALTON

After joining the Canadian national team in the mid-1980s, Brian Walton attended his first Summer Olympics in 1988, finishing 33rd among 136 competitors in the road race and 13th among 31 nations in the 100 kilometer team time trial (alongside Chris Koberstein, David Spears, and Yvan Waddell). He missed the 1992 Summer Games and, although he won a bronze medal in the 10 mile scratch race at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, did not make a major international splash until 1995, when he won both the road and points races at the Pan American Games. He then entered the points race at the 1996 Olympics, two months after major knee surgery, and captured the silver medal behind Italian world champion Silvio Martinello. His last major hurrah was defending his Pan American road race title in 1999, although he slid to fifth in the points race. His final international tournament was the 2000 Summer Olympics, where he finished 9th among 23 participants in the points race and was unable to complete the road race. He retired soon after and took up roles in the sport as a coach and administrator. He was made a member of the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
