Biographie

Birgit Clarius was a multi-athlete whose greatest moment was her bronze medal at the 1993 Indoor World Championships in the pentathlon. She also took part at the European Championships in 1986 (DNF) and 1990 (7th), the 1992 Indoor European Championships (4th), and the 1993 World Championships (8th). Clarius won national titles in the heptathlon in 1990 and 1992-94. At Barcelona 1992 she finished seventh in the heptathlon.

In 1993 she married decathlete and non-Olympian Michael Heß, who then took her name as his future surname. Her father Volker Clarius was a well-known handball player, long jumper and decathlete, while her sister Astrid competed nationally over 200 m and 400 m.
