Biographie

Arthur Townsend took part in his first Southern Counties Cross-country Championship at Lingfield Park race course in 1904, finishing well down the field behind Alf Shrubb, who won the title for the fourth consecutive year. Townsend competed in his first AAA championship at Stamford Bridge in the 10 miles in 1906 and in 1909 took part in the Polytechnic Harriers Marathon from Windsor to Stamford Bridge and finished well in the pack just behind the third man home. Townsend was the second Briton to finish behind Harry Green in the 1912 Olympic Marathon, and the following year, at the age of 30 Townsend again took part in the Southern Counties cross-country.

Personal Best: Mar – 2-48:52.2 (1912).
