Anatoly Samotsvetov was one of the top Soviet hammer throwers in the late 1950s, but during his career, was overshadowed by Mikhail Krivonosov and Vasily Rudenkov. Samotsvetov won bronze at the 1956 Olympics and was seventh in 1960. He also won silver at the 1959 Universiade and competed at the 1958 European Championships, placing 10th. Samotsvetov never won a Soviet title, finishing second four times in a row – in 1957 and 1958 behind Krivonosov and in 1959 and 1960 behind Rudenkov.
