Javelin thrower Wolfram Gambke was coached by his father Heinrich. Wolfram placed fourth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics which were boycotted by the Soviet Bloc. He also placed sixth at the 1986 European Championships. That same year he won his lone national title, placing second in 1981, 1984 and 1985. He later worked as a project manager at the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Workers' Welfare Association) in his hometown of Pinneberg.
