The year of 1988 was a very successful swimming year for the young Ukrainian soldier Valeriy Lozik. First, in the absence of Dmitry Volkov, the best Soviet breaststroke swimmer at the end of 1980s, Lozik won the 50, 100, and 200 breaststroke and medley relay titles at the Soviet Championships and was selected to the Soviet 1988 Olympic team. At the Olympics Lozik won bronze in the medley relay and was fifth in the 200 breast. In 1989 Lozik also competed at the European Championships, where he was seventh in the 200 breaststroke. In addition to his four 1988 Soviet titles, Lozik won Soviet titles in the 1987 medley relay and 1989 200 breaststroke. Lozik finished his sporting career at the fall of Soviet Union and later owned a real estate company in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Personal Best: 100 m breaststroke – 1:02.84 (1988); 200 m breaststroke – 2:15.54 (1988).
