The greatest moment in the career of Rolf Danneberg was his 1984 Olympic gold medal, although the Eastern European countries boycotted these games. Four years later he added to his Olympic success with a bronze medal. Danneberg also took part in the 1987 World Championships (fourth) and the 1982, 1986, and 1990 European Championships, although with less success. Danneberg won a bronze medal at the 1989 World Cup. Domestically he managed won national titles in 1980, 1988 and 1989, also adding five seconds and four third places. In 1989 he was awarded the Rudolf-Harbig-Gedächtnispreis (Memory Price) and 1984 the Silver Bay Leaf. Danneberg later became a coach.
