Melanie Skillman started shooting archery at age 10. She was US field archery champion in 1985, and was an eight-time Pennsylvania state champion. Skillman was second at the 1987 US Nationals and third at the 1988 US Olympic Trials to make the Seoul Olympics, where she helped the US team win a bronze medal. Skillman also tried to make the US Olympic team in 1980 and 1984. During her training for the Olympics she worked at Godiva Chocholates in Reading, Pennsylvania. Skillman’s best memory of her Olympic medal came after her time on the podium. At she boarded the bus to go back to the Olympic Village, her medal unscrewed and she had to chase after it as it rolled down the parking lot.
