Kent MANDERVILLE

Prior to accepting a two-year ice hockey scholarship at Cornell University in 1989, forward Kent Manderville had played the sport for a season each with the minor Victoria Racquet Club, the midget Notre Dame Hounds, and the junior Notre Dame Hounds. The year he joined Cornell also marked the beginning of his first season with the Canadian national ice hockey team, an affiliation that would last until 1992 and earn him gold medals at the 1990 and 1991 World Championships, as well as a silver medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics. At the latter tournament he skated for eight matches and scored one goal. Shortly before the Olympics the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames, who had picked him up in 1989 but never put him on the ice, traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs and, upon his return, he split the remainder of the 1991-1992 season between Toronto and the American Hockey League’s affiliated St. John’s Maple Leafs. Although he spent the majority of the next year with the latter team, he was a full-time Toronto player from 1993 through 1995, at which point he stayed with St. John’s, but was traded to the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers for a year. His 1996-1997 season was spent between the NHL’s Hartford Whalers and the AHL’s Springfield Falcons, but he stuck with the Whalers when they became the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997 and he skated with them exclusively until 1999. He took his career overseas in 2003, after having suited up with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers (1999-2001) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2001-2003), and played for Timra IK of Sweden (2003-2006, and was team MVP during his final season) and the Espoo Blues of Finland (2006-2007). He announced his retirement in 2007, so that he could attend law school, but he has continued his involvement with hockey as an occasional analyst for Ottawa Senators games.
