A four-time Olympian, Herbert Polzhuber started at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where he competed in both fencing and modern pentathlon. In 1968 at Mexico City he had his best Olympic finish when he placed fifth in individual épée fencing. At the fencing World Championships in team épée, Polzhuber finished fifth in 1967 and sixth in 1970. Polzhuber later became a trainer for his former club, Heeressportverein Wien. He also taught at the Austrian military school HSNS, where he served as commander.
