Herbert Albrecht, the father of Ferdi Albrecht, grew up in the very wrestling popular town of Suhl in East Germany. He won his first youth championship in 1942 before he was drafted for military service. After World War II he became German Champion in 1951, 1952 and 1954. He also won 18 East German national titles between 1949 and 1964. In 1960 he participated in the Roma Olympics in the light-heavyweight Greco-Roman style, but was eliminated after his third fight. He later coached several wrestlers at his home club, including his son. By profession he was an apprentice trainer in the "Simson" motorcycles company.
