Grethe Werner, one of the pioneers for women’s sports in Norway, was a very versatile athlete. With her club Grefsen IF she won six national titles in handball, and played 35 country matches for Norway. In athletics, she was Norwegian champion in shot put twice (1948, 1953) and discus once (1949) as a member of Torshaug IF. Her national record in the shot put, 11.65 from 1948, stood for four years. In gymnastics, she was national champion in 1953, representing Oslo Turnforening. She worked for the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, and was also a national coach in rhythmic gymnastics. Her husband Olaf Evjenth was a decent shot putter and discus thrower, competing in several national championships and was a trainer for the 1960 Norwegian Olympic team.
