Gottfried Kustermann was a very successful West German small-bore rifle sports and crossbow shooter, winning 10 gold medals at the World Championships, 16 gold medals at the European Championships, and also 44 West German national titles. He also participated in the 1972 München and the 1976 Montréal Summer Games, but with less success. His best result was the seventh place in the three positions event in his hometown München in 1972. In 1971, he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest sports award in Germany.
Kustermann was the son of a butcher and pub owner, and he also trained as a butcher. He later built up a world-wide operating wholesale company for sports shooting goods.
