After running in the 400 m and 800 m at the 1904 Olympics, George Underwood won a gold medal as a member of the New York AC team that won the four-mile team race. Individually, Underwood placed fifth in the 10-man field. Underwood later became a well-known sportswriter. He was boxing editor of the New York World, sports editor of the New York Morning Telegraph, sports editor and columnist for the Boston American, and a news editor for the Boston Globe. He also served as publicity director for the Madison Square Garden.
