Ernő Márkus started his career in the colors of BAK in 1908. In 1912, he was third in the Hungarian championship and competed at the Stockholm Olympics. The following year, he won the Hungarian and Budapest championship titles as a lightweight. In 1914, he placed third in 67.5 kg at the unofficial European Championship.
After World War I, Márkus moved to Wien (Vienna), where he continued his wrestling career and won the Austrian championship in 1923, and became the coach of Hakoah in Vienna. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, he was the head coach of the Austrian wrestling team.
