Biografía

Doug Bennett started his athletic career as a swimmer and hockey player, playing junior hockey with the Montréal Royals in 1937. But he took up canoeing out of frustration when his swim career did not advance. He was Canadian champion several times between 1934-1939, and qualified for the 1940 Olympic Games, which were not held. In 1947 he was Canadian champion in singles, tandem, and fours, and was voted Montréal Sportsman of the Year. After competing in the 1948 Olympics he joined Bell Canada’s engineering department but continued to canoe for exercise.
