Biografía

Alexander “Babe” Weyand attended the US Military Academy at West Point, where he starred as a tackle on the football team, captaining it in 1915. He became a career Army officer, serving with distinction in World War I, where he earned a Silver Star for gallantry and received a battlefield promotion to major and battalion commander. Weyand sustained severe hearing loss during WWI and as a result could not serve in combat in World War II. He retired from the Army in 1946 as a Colonel.

Weyand later became a sports historian, writing several books on college football, including Saga of American Football. He also wrote the definitive history of lacrosse, The Lacrosse Story (with Milton Roberts), and one well-known book on the early history of the Olympics. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1974.
