Primarily known as a relay runner, Aleksandr Aksinin made his international début at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, where he won a bronze medal with the Soviet 4x100 m relay team. In 1977, he won gold at the Universiade as a member of Soviet sprint relay team and at the 1978 European Championships, he added another bronze in the short relay. At the 1980 Moskva Olympics, Aksinin was fourth in the 100 metres and ran the third leg on the gold medal winning Soviet 4x100 m relay team. Aksinin ended his sprint career after the 1982 European Championships, where he won gold in the relay. He was Soviet 200 metre champion in 1976 and 4x100 m champion in 1974, 1978, and 1980.
