Biografía

Afrânio Antônio da Costa became a prominent sports administrator, jurist and politician. He graduated from the Free Faculty of Law and Social Sciences in Rio de Janeiro, and was president of the Federal Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Brazil. His first important position in sports was as president of the Fluminense Football Club. After winning Brazil’s first Olympic medal at Antwerpen, he was again successful at the Latin American Olympic Games in 1922 in Rio de Janeiro, and was also significantly involved in their organization. Da Costa won a number of Brazilian titles in shooting. At the first Football World Championships he was head of the Brazilian delegation, and in 1923 was one of the founders of the first Brazilian Shooting Federation. He held the post of president of the re-organized Brazilian Federation for Target Shooting (1947-62) and president of the Metropolitan Association of Athletic Sports (AMEA).
