The biggest department in Île-de-France

Seine-et-Marne, the most extensive department in Île-de-France, is a mosaic of landscapes home to 1.4 million people. Almost 35% of residents are under 25. Hosting the Paris 2024 Games and rolling out the red carpet for the Olympic and Paralympic torches can be a source of inspiration for the new generations. The department also stands out for its hospitable culture. In 2019, a whopping 18.2 million tourists visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Provins and Fontainebleau or some of its 640 listed monuments. The Seine-et-Marne department is well connected to the world. Its appeal shines through world-class businesses such as Safran, which runs a plant in Villaroche.

70 years of hard work and commitment

The department was one of the cradles of wheelchair basketball in France in the 1950s. Driven by Christian Roussel, who was part of the inaugural Paralympic Games in 1960s, Meaux has become a bastion of this sport. The department has also set up "Team 77", consisting of six Paralympic athletes, including the rower Margot Boulet and the fencer Yohan Peter. By welcoming the Paralympic torch in 2024, hosting the para-rowing and para-canoeing events in Vaires-sur-Marne, stepping up for Paralympic ticketing and appointing a task officer for para-sport, the department strengthens its commitment to the promotion of para-sport, which began in 2021. It aspires to make it possible for people with disabilities to engage in sports within a 10 km radius of home.
