Sporting excellence combined with easy living
Lorient is a fascinating port town located in the heart of the Morbihan department. It is the centre of a wider conurbation and combines sporting excellence with easy living. Lorient is Europe’s leading centre for ocean racing but the town and its conurbation are also renowned for their exploits on land, thanks to emblematic clubs such as FC Lorient in Ligue 1, French football’s top tier division, Garde du Vœu d'Hennebont, the 2019 European table tennis champions, as well as CEP Lorient Basket and Lanester Handball, clubs which play at national level. Its port, which was once a major trading centre, bears witness to its rich maritime heritage. The town is also renowned for the Inter-Celtic Festival, which is a yearly international event celebrating Celtic culture.
Support for all sportspeople
For several years, the local authorities in and around Lorient have been involved in the project Handicap Innovation Territoire to make the area a reference for accessibility to people with disabilities. This ambition naturally involves participation in sport. As a result, the town is developing a para-sport resource centre aimed at both elite athletes and amateur sportspeople, in partnership with the French Federation of Para-sport. Finally, at a local level, the municipality supports the development of para-sports sections in Lorient's sports clubs.
