Innovative and forward-looking

Laon is the administrative centre of the Aisne department with a population of 26,000, whilst its wider conurbation includes 43,000 inhabitants. Laon is the former capital of the Frankish kingdom and its surrounding area has witnessed major invasions and battles. Surrounded by ramparts, Laon’s cathedral in the heart of the medieval city is the jewel in the crown of its 80 listed monuments. The city is recognised for its architecture and history and each year it attracts more than 200,000 visitors from around the world, while every day its inhabitants enjoy an outstanding living environment on a human scale. With its rich history, Laon is an innovative and forward-looking place, with an exceptional environment for sporting activities.

The Relay: an all-encompassing event

The city of Laon wants to take advantage of the Paralympic Games and the Paralympic Torch Relay to reinforce the development of para-sports. Strong, long-term partnerships have been forged with associations and specialist establishments. The local authorities work in close collaboration with the local Para-sport and Adapted Sport committee as well as, more recently, the French Paralympic and Sports Committee. The city of Laon is proud to be setting up the Inclusive Club programme from 2023 to strengthen existing sections and develop new ones.
