This season it's been quality over quantity for Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

The reigning Olympic champion in the women's 400m hurdles has run her marquee event just once, but has won every individual race she's entered, including rare outings in the 200m dash and 100m hurdles.

It's all readied her for this weekend's U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track and Field, where she enters as the heavy favourite in the 400m hurdles, an event she's captured at both Tokyo 2020 in 2021 as well as the 2022 World Championships, held at the same venue as these Trials, Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

McLaughlin toyed with the 400m flat during this Olympic quad, but opted out of the event as she dealt with a knee injury last season, which knocked her out of Worlds in 2023.

But if there are any lingering impacts of that injury she has not shown them on the competitive track, nearly breaking Sanya Richards-Ross' 400m American record in her most recent outing, the NYC Grand Prix on 9 June, clocking a 48.75.

The 24-year-old will begin a quest Thursday (27 June) to become the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic golds in her event since it was introduced for the women into the Games in 1984.
