Paris 2024 taekwondo: All results, as Italy's Simone Alessio, Denmark's Edi Hrnic win bronze in men’s -80kg
The Paris 2024 men's -80kg bronze medal matches saw Italian and Danish athletes emerge triumphant at the Grand Palais on Friday, 9 August.
In the bronze medal A match, Italy’s Simone Alessio won 2-0 over Team USA’s CJ Nickolas. The bronze medal match B saw Denmark’s Edi Hrnic win 2-0 over the Republic of Korea’s Seo Geonwoo.
Later Friday, the gold-medal final saw Tunisia’s Firas Katoussi beat the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Mehran Barkhordari 2-0 to become Olympic champion. Barkhordari settled for silver.
Hrnic’s bronze medal win for Denmark marks the first taekwondo medal for his country at the Olympic Games.
"Not just am I the first medal, but I'm also the first [Denmark] participant in 20 years,” said Hrnic. “So to come here as the first participant in 20 years and win a medal shows the next generation how important [t is] and how it can be done.”
He said of his match against Seo: “I'm very happy. A very tough opponent. He's so good. He's so tight. He's so strong. To win today is just a mark of my evolution for the past year. Last time I was in Paris, he absolutely destroyed me. So, to come back and win like this, I'm very happy."
Alessio was happy with his bronze-medal finish as well after having lost out at Tokyo 2020 in the quarter-finals.
"It’s beautiful to have a medal around the neck," said Alessio. "I had come here for gold, but luck gave me this second chance after quarter-finals, and I could not lose this opportunity.
"This medal means so much to me. It’s all the work I’ve put into these three years, so I’m very satisfied. I cannot wait to have it between my hands and give it to my parents."
