Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling qualifiers: India’s selection trials in March
The winners at the selection trials in the Olympic weight categories will represent India at the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier and the World Olympic Games Qualifier.
The selection to pick the Indian wrestlers for the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling qualifiers will be held on March 10 and 11, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed ad-hoc committee announced on Friday.
The trials for women wrestlers will be held at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala while the trials for men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers will be held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Sonepat.
"Earlier, the trials were announced to be held from February 27 to 29. However, because of a delay in organising the 2023 Senior National Championships due to unavoidable circumstances, the trials are being postponed," the ad-hoc committee stated.
Wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympics will see competitions in 18 weight divisions. So far, Antim Panghal is the only Indian wrestler to have secured an Olympic quota, courtesy her bronze medal finish in women’s 53kg at last year’s World Championships. India can obtain 17 more wrestling quota places for the Paris Olympics.
The winners at the selection trials in the Olympic weight categories will represent India at the Asian Olympic Games qualifiers in Kyrgyzstan scheduled for April and the World Olympic Games qualifiers in Turkey slated for May.
The winners in non-Olympic weight categories along with the runners-up in Olympic weight categories at the selection trials will represent India at the Asian Wrestling Championships in April.
India have won a total of seven medals in wrestling at the Olympics so far. Wrestling events at the Paris 2024 Olympics will take place from August 5 to 11 at the Champ de Mars Arena.
