Nagase Takanori of Japan won his second Olympic gold medal in men’s judo -81kg by a final score of 11-0 over silver medallist Tato Grigalashvili of Georgia at Paris 2024 on Tuesday 30 July.

Lee Joonhwan of the Republic of Korea defeated Belgian Matthias Casse in the bronze-medal match A by a tally of 1-0 to capture his first Olympic medal. Somon Makhmadbekov of Tajikistan beat Antonio Esposito of Italy in bronze-medal match B 10-0 to capture his country’s fifth Olympic medal ever.

After winning this event at Tokyo 2020, Takanori became the first man ever to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the -81kg weight class.

Grigalashvili put forth a valiant effort in the final but came up short. Entering the Games, he had won three consecutive world championships including gold at the 2024 Judo World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

Lee, who won gold at the 2024 Asian Judo Championships, reached the podium in his debut at the Games to earn his first Olympic medal. He was overcome by emotion following his match.

As was Makhmadbekov, who secured a rare Olympic medal for his nation, after reaching the round of 16 of the men’s -79kg in Tokyo.
