India, despite a 2-1 loss to Belgium, finished second in their group largely thanks to a 3-2 win over Australia in their final group game. It was the Indian men's hockey team's first win over the Kookaburras in Olympic hockey since Munich 1972.
Drawn against Great Britain in the quarter-finals, India, reduced to 10 men for over 40 minutes of the match after a red card to Amit Rohidas, defied the odds and picked out a shootout win largely thanks to Sreejesh's heroics.
However, a close 2-3 loss to Germany in the semis denied India a first Olympic final appearance since Moscow 1980.
Up against Spain in the bronze medal match saw the Indian men's hockey team land on the Olympic podium for the second successive edition.
