Lovlina Borgohain at Paris 2024 Olympics: Women’s 75kg boxing schedule, India match start times
Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who is set to compete in the women’s 75kg category, will begin her Paris 2024 Olympics boxing campaign on July 31.
Lovlina Borgohain won a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 in the welterweight category (69kg). She became only the third Indian boxer to bag an Olympic boxing medal after Vijender Singh at Beijing 2008 and Mary Kom at London 2012.
At Tokyo 2020, Lovlina defeated Germany’s Nadine Apetz in the round of 16 and secured a medal by beating Chen Nien-Chin of Taiwan in the quarter-finals.
Her campaign ended with a defeat in the semi-finals to eventual gold medallist Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey, but a historic bronze paved the way for more success.
At the Asian Championships 2022, Borgohain competed in the middleweight (75kg) category and went on to bag a gold medal. In the following year, she also added a World Championships gold in the same category.
The 26-year-old boxer won the Olympic quota by making it to the finals of the Asian Games last year, where she won the silver medal.
Borgohain, seeded eighth, will enter the Paris 2024 Olympics as the only seeded Indian boxer. Li Qian of the People’s Republic of China, who beat Borgohain for the Asian Games gold in Hangzhou last year, was a silver medallist at Tokyo 2020 in this category. She is the top seed in Paris in the women’s 75kg.
Reigning 75kg world champion Khadija Mardi (Morocco), European champion Aoife O'Rourke (Ireland) and reigning Commonwealth Games champion Tammara Thibeault (Canada) are the other contenders for a medal in middleweight.
