India’s Avinash Sable will compete in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which starts at the Stade de France on Monday.

Steeplechase athletics events at Paris 2024 will be conducted over two phases - round 1 and the final medal race.

The 36 competing steeplechasers will be divided into three heats of 12 each for round 1. The top five from each heat will then progress to the final.

Avinash Sable, currently ranked 15th in the world, is in heat 2 with Kenya’s world No. 3 Abraham Kibiwot, the Commonwealth Games champion and a world championships bronze medal winner.

Ethiopia’s Samuel Firewu, the 2023 African Games champion and world No. 4, and world No. 9 Ryuji Miura are the other top names in the group.

Avinash Sable (India), Nahuel Carabana (Andorra), Alexis Miellet (France), Abraham Kibiwot (Kenya), Matthew Wilkinson (USA), Tomas Habarta (Czechia), Velten Schneider (Germany), Samuel Firewu (Ethiopia), Mohamed Tindouft (Morocco), Matthew Clarke (Australia), Ryuji Miura (Japan), Osama Zoghlami (Italy)

At his debut Summer Games at Tokyo 2020, Sable narrowly missed the cut for the final but will back himself for a medal race at Paris 2024.

The Indian runner comes into Paris 2024 in good shape having recently clocked a new personal best of 8:09.91, also the national record, to finish sixth at the Paris Diamond League last month.

Only Kibiwot (8:06.70) and Firewu (8:05.78) have a better personal best than Sable in heat 2. Miura’s best time is exactly the same as Sable’s.

Sable also won a historic silver medal for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, finishing behind Kibiwot, and became the Asian Games champion in Hangzhou last year.

Reigning Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco will start from heat 1 with an eye on becoming the first man to defend the men’s 3000m steeplechase title at the Summer Games since Finnish legend Volmari Iso-Hollo managed to win back-to-back gold medals in 1928 and 1932.

Bakkali’s ambitions, however, face a daunting threat in Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma, who is in heat 3 for the first round.

Having finished behind Bakkali at Tokyo 2020 as well as the last two world championships, the Ethiopian, eager to come out of the Moroccan’s shadows, made a huge statement of intent last month.

He clocked 7:52.11 at the Paris Diamond League to take down Qatari Saif Saaeed Shaheen’s long-standing world record after two decades.
