Australia will field over 450 athletes in 329 medal events across 42 different sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which officially gets underway on July 26 in Paris, France.

There will be Australian interest in all but three sports - handball, volleyball and fencing - in the Paris 2024 programme. The Paris 2024 Olympics will be live streamed and broadcast in Australia.

Though the official Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony is scheduled for July 26 (early July 27 in Australia), several sports like football, rugby sevens, handball and archery will kick off beforehand.

Players of the Australian men’s rugby team will be the first Aussie athletes in action at Paris 2024 when they take on Samoa in a group stage match at the iconic Stade de France.

The 33rd edition of the Summer Games being hosted in Paris makes the French capital the second city to host three Olympics after London. Paris had previously hosted the 1900 and 1924 editions as well.

Australian athletes had secured 46 medals - 17 gold medals, seven silver and 22 bronze - from Tokyo 2020. However, the country’s best-ever medal tally was at Athens 2004, where they secured 17 golds, 16 silver and 17 bronze for a total of 50.

More than half of the Australian Olympic team for Paris 2024 are women. Equestrian Shane Rose, 51, is the oldest member of the 2024 Australian Olympic team while skateboarder Arisa Trew is the youngest at just 14.

The Australian swimming team for Paris 2024 includes multiple Olympic medallists Ariarne Titmus, Emma McKeon, Kaylee McKeown, Kyle Chalmers, Brianna Throssell and Mollie O’Callaghan among others. Swimming is the sport which has produced the most Olympic medals for the country,

The athletics team includes Tokyo 2020 high jump silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers and Tokyo 2020 javelin throw bronze medallist Kelsey-Lee Barber. Matthew Denny, the reigning Diamond League champion in men’s discus throw, will be gunning for his maiden Olympic medal on his third appearance.

Global stars like Peter Bol, Michelle Jenneke and rising sensation Torrie Lewis are also part of the Aussie athletics contingent to Paris.

Harry Garside, who also won a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, will headline Australia’s 12-member boxing team.

Jessica Fox will be at Paris 2024 in a bid to secure her fifth Olympic medal. The Australian canoeist won the gold medal in the women’s C1 event three years ago. She bagged silver at London 2012 and bronze medals at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 in the K1 events. Fox will compete in both C1 and K1 events in Paris.

Jessica’s younger sister Noemi will also be a part of the Australian band to Paris.

Interestingly, four other sibling duos - Minjee and Min Woo Lee in golf, Blake and Lachlan Edwards in water polo, Maddison and Teagan Levi in rugby sevens and Jean and Pierre van der Westhuyzen in canoe sprint - are also set to represent Australia at Paris 2024.

Breaking will make its Olympic debut in Paris and will have two participants from Australia. Australian women will also compete for the first time in Olympic 3x3 basketball.
