Paris 2024: Men’s 100m preview, full schedule and how to watch live
As always, there are big expectations for the men’s 100m at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Can Italy's Marcell Jacobs defend his Olympic title to match American Carl Lewis and Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt, the only other men to have won multiple gold medals in the 100m at the Olympics?
It will only happen if he can hold off several challengers for the title, led by the USA's Noah Lyles who is hungry for his first Olympic gold medal after winning 200m bronze at Tokyo 2020.
Lyles, the reigning double sprint world champion, hopes gold in the 100m competition can set him on the path to the target of four Olympic titles he hopes to clinch in Paris.
However, he is only the third fastest man this year after Jamaica’s 2024 champion Kishane Thompson dashed to a world-leading time of 9.77 seconds when he won the Olympic trials in Kingston.
Kenya's African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala holds the second fastest time of the season, ahead of Lyles who ran a personal best of 9.81 in his first 2024 race outside U.S. soil at this year's London Diamond League in July.

Letsile Tebogo of Botswana is also one to watch closely after his surprise second-place finish behind Lyles at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
The U.S. duo of Olympic 200m silver medallist Kenny Bednarek and 2022 world champion Fred Kerley will also be chasing Olympic glory as both compete at their second Games.
Returning to his third Olympics, Akani Simbine’s experience could make all the difference as he seeks to win his first global medal. The South African is enjoying his running and is confident of reaching the top of the podium in Paris.
“I feel like I have the fastest top-end speed in the world right now,” he said in an interview with Olympics.com just before the Games. “Once I get a top-end speed, I will catch you and I will pass you and I'm going to win. That's where I'm at. And that's what my head tells me. And that's something I believe in now.”
