The picturesque setting of Château de Versailles hosted a thrilling equestrian contest, where Team GB clinched their first gold medal at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, defending their equestrian eventing team title on 29 July.

The British-French equestrian rivalry was on full display in the royal setting, with Laura Collett, Tom McEwen, and Rosalind Canter riding their way to the Olympic crown.

Collett, riding London 52, and McEwen, on JL Dublin, built on their previous successes from Tokyo 2020. Olympic debutant Canter, with Lordships Graffalo, rounded out the team to finish with a total of 91.3 in the jumping portion to defend their title.

This victory marks Great Britain's fifth Olympic gold medal in eventing and distinguishes them as the only NOC among 16 to finish with a penalty score under 100 across all three riders.

Collett, who nearly escaped death in 2013, jumped a near-perfect round and is now in third place going into the individual rounds.

The equestrian world showed up in force to Versailles, said to be a record attendance for eventing.

McEwen described the electric atmosphere, saying that "from yesterday’s cross-country with the noise as you were going around, it’s like a world of noise following you around. Today’s shown off the best of this sport's abilities."

Collett, now a double Olympic champion, echoed the sentiment: “Unreal feeling. It felt so special in Tokyo but this is blowing it out of the water.”

The host nation, and Rio 2016 Olympic champions France, came second, while Japan achieved a historic bronze—its first-ever Olympic medal in eventing and its first equestrian medal since 1932.
