France’s Nicolas Gestin has won gold in the men's canoe slalom (C-1) event at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on Monday 29 July. It’s a course he knows well, as he has trained at it to prepare for the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Gestin was the final competitor of the day and beat out Great Britain’s Adam Burgess by more than five seconds to take gold with a rapid time of 91.36 seconds. Burgess's silver-winning effort saw him register an impressive time of 96.84, while Slovakia's Matej Benus won bronze in 97.03.

"I don't know what to say, it's better than my dreams. It's my best race of my life," he said after winning. "

"Everyone on my team – my mentor, my brother and I – wanted it. When I crossed the line, I knew I had put in a great run, and now I just enjoy it."

The result marks another winning performance by a French athlete at these Games, and the crowd roared its support for the new Olympic gold medallist just as it has each of the three 13 medallists who have come before him at Paris 2024.

For Burgess, who finished agonisingly close to the podium at Tokyo 2020, this silver was a rich reward for the hard work and sacrifice he has put in over the past three years.
