Paris 2024 boxing: All results, as People's Republic of China's Wu Yu wins gold in women’s 50kg
The People's Republic of China's Wu Yu boxed her way to Olympic glory in the women's 50kg at Paris 2024 on Friday, 9 August. Wu won gold 4-1 against Türkiye's Buse Naz Cakiroglu, who finished with the silver medal at Stade Roland-Garros.
Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay and the Philippines' Aira Villegas finished with bronze.
After the judges' call was made, a jubilant Wu danced around the ring.
“Today I gave them a dance. I love to dance,” said Wu. “This is my first time at an Olympic Games, so many people try to qualify and I’m so happy to win the gold medal. I have trained very hard and all that hard work paid off. I won the gold for my team, my coach, my country.”
This makes back-to-back silvers for Cakiroglu, who was disappointed in the result. "I gave 100 per cent in the ring, but I don’t think the score was fair. It was unfair," she said. "If I have to have silver here, then so be it. Unfortunately, the score wasn’t right."
Despite her dissapointment, she said of her two silver medals: "I can’t feel the difference between the two. But we have worked so hard and it comes down to one day after [three] years. To get to the final again means so much. We will see for the next Games [Los Angeles 2028]."
