Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines and Esra Yildiz Kahraman of Türkiye took bronze but missed out on the gold medal match in the boxing women’s 57kg at Paris 2024.

Kahraman’s run was brought to an end in a 5-0 unanimous decision defeat to number one seed Lin Yu Ting of Chinese Taipei, though comes away with her nation’s third bronze of the Games.

Petecio was defeated by Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in a split decision, 4-1, in their semi-final clash on Wednesday, 7 August at Roland-Garros.

Petecio takes Philippines’ second boxing bronze

This is Petecio's second Olympic medal after she won silver at Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021), after a hard-fought bout with the Polish fighter.

Although beaten, the 32-year-old's bronze earns the Philippines their fourth medal of Paris 2024 and their second in boxing after Aira Villegas took bronze the day before.

Petecio was on top in the opening round, showing great grit and impressing all five judges who gave it in her favour. But her opponent was resurgent in the second round and pulled herself back into it, though neither boxer was really able to take control of the fight.

That is how it would stay in the third and final round, with just a point between them and a place in the gold medal match at stake.

It was Szeremeta who prevailed in the end, taking a 4-1 victory via split decision to advance to the final.

Kahraman defeated by unanimous decision but secures bronze

In the earlier bout, Kahraman faced a tough challenge against the gold medal favourite Lin and had to defend herself against a relentless opponent from the first bell.

Lin was on the offensive and took control of the bout in the opening round, continuing in the same manner all evening. But the Turkish fighter did not give up and tried to find a way through until the very end.

It was always going to be a tough ask and, despite defeat at the semi-final stage, Kahraman can head home with her head high.

Her bronze medal result is an improvement on her fifth placed finish three years ago at Tokyo 2020, bringing home Türkiye’s fourth medal of Paris 2024.
