USA star Tara Davis-Woodhall delivered the perfect series of leaps to capture the women’s long jump title at Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Thursday, 8 August.

The 25-year-old usurped defending champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany of her crown from Tokyo 2020 with a winning leap of 7.10 metres. Mihambo had to be content with silver thanks to a fifth-round effort of 6.98m.

American compatriot Jasmine Moore was in equally good form, taking the bronze medal with a jump of 6.96m and with that adding to the bronze medal she won in the triple jump on Saturday, 3 August.

Davis-Woodhall was on fire at these Olympic Games, leading the charge from the qualifying rounds to the final.

She delivered the goods each time she approached the board. Davis-Woodhall opened with 6.95m before adding seven centimetres on her second attempt. In the fourth round, she produced a mammoth winning leap of 7.10m.

The horizontal jumper highlighted her dominance on the night, boasting a series of six jumps of 6.93m, 7.05m, 6.95m, 7.10m, 6.61m and 6.68m.

Davis-Woodhall became only the fourth American to win the Olympic gold medal in the women’s long jump behind Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1988), Brittney Reese (2012) and Tianna Bartoletta (2016).
