To conclude the stunning competition that is artistic swimming at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, People’s Republic of China’s twins Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi came out on top of the duet competition to clinch gold with a massive score of 566.4783 on Saturday, 10 August.

The Chinese swept the competition at the Aquatics Centre, adding tonight’s win to their gold medal from the team competition, where all three of their routines scored higher than the rest of the field.

“We were under a lot of pressure these last few days,” said Liuyi.

“But we’re happy with ourselves because we managed that pressure well and turned it into a strength. We’re super happy to have won gold.”

Going into the second of two routines that make up the duet competition, the twins held a near-10 point lead on the rest of the field after their “Gravitation” free routine captivated the audience and judges alike.

"We both hope that we will be able to talk with these younger generations and share our experiences with them so that they have an example to follow and a goal,” Liuyi added.

Great Britain's Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe took the silver to become the only non-twin duet to land on the podium, coming out on top of the Netherlands' Bregje de Brouwer and Noortje de Brouwer.

“I feel absolutely on top of the world,” said Team GB’s Thorpe.

“It’s just amazing to be here and to think how far we’ve come from the last Olympics. We came 14th in Tokyo... after last night, when we came fourth in the technical duet, we knew we had to do something special today to climb those rankings and to come off with a silver medal, it’s a dream come true.”
