First debuting as a medal sport for men at Berlin 1936, and later for women at Montreal 1976, basketball is one of the most exciting and enduring sports of the Summer Olympic Games.

The United States, where the game of basketball first originated, has dominated both the men's and women's events boasting 25 gold medals. Only four other countries have ever been crowned Olympic champions.

Which country has won the most Olympic basketball medals?

The United States is the most successful country in Olympic basketball history.

The men’s teams have won 17 of the 20 tournaments that have been held while the women’s teams have won 10 out of 12 tournaments.

Both have enjoyed impressive winning streaks, with the men going unbeaten from 1936 to 1968 while the women are currently on a winning run having not lost since Atlanta 1996.
