The four-day National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2024, from Thursday to Sunday, will see India’s top track and field athletes in action at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana.

The 63rd edition of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships will be the final Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying event for Indian track and field athletes. The athletics qualifying window for the upcoming Summer Games ends on June 30.

The Panchkula meet will also serve as the final selection trials to pick the Indian athletics contingent for Paris 2024.

Except for Neeraj Chopra, who has been exempted from the trials, and Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who pulled out at the eleventh hour due to an injury, all other top Indian athletes will be in action in Panchkula.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has marked the inter-state meet as a compulsory event for Indian athletes looking to compete at the Paris Olympics.

More than podium finishes, most Indian athletes will be looking to breach the Paris 2024 Olympic entry standards in their respective events.

Asian Games 2023 silver medallist Jyothi Yarraji, who has missed the qualifying mark for the Paris Olympics by 0.01s on two occasions, will have a final chance to breach the entry standard of 12.77s in the women’s 100m hurdle.

Last year, Yarraji rewrote the national record at the World University Games with a timing of 12.78s and matched the effort in Finland last month.

However, Yarraji is 31st in the Road to Paris 24 list and placed well to secure a quota for India through rankings in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Athletes can either obtain a Paris 2024 quota for their country by breaching the entry standard or through the Road to Paris 24 rankings.

Asian Games women’s javelin throw champion Annu Rani, men’s javelin thrower Manu DP, national record holders Jeswin Aldrin (men’s long jump), Abha Khatua (women’s shot put) and Praveen Chithravel (men’s triple jump) also have not breached the qualifying mark but are poised to make the quota through rankings.

In the men’s high jump, Tejaswin Shankar, Jesse Sandesh and Sarvesh Kushare are all outside the cut off in the Road to Paris 24 rankings and need to breach the entry standard of 2.33m at the inter-state meet.

The same goes for most of the athletes competing in Panchkula, including Commonwealth Games men’s triple jump champion Eldhose Paul and sprinters Hima Das and Amlan Borgohain.

For the likes of Kishore Jena, Avinash Sable, Parul Chaudhary and race walkers Akshdeep Singh, Priyanka Goswami, Vikas Singh, Paramjeet Bisht, Ram Baboo and the Indian relay teams, who have already breached the Olympic entry standard, it will be a chance to consolidate their claim for a spot in the Indian team for the Paris Olympics.

The women’s long jump, meanwhile, will see tough competition between Asian Games silver medallist Ancy Sojan, the 2021 U20 World Championships silver medallist Shaili Singh and Asian Championships bronze medallist Nayana James. The entry standard for the event is 6.86m.

The National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2024 will conclude on Sunday.
