The reigning world under-21 champion in women's single-handed dinghy secured a spot for her nation in the class at the 2024 ILCA 6 World Championships in Argentina.

With one race to spare, Eve McMahon secured a quota spot for Ireland sailing in the women’s one person dinghy for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

By virtue of finishing in the top 30 at the ILCA6 World Championships, which concluded on Wednesday (10 January) in Mar del Plata, Argentina, McMahon secured the spot for the Olympic extravaganza hosted in Marseille in less than seven months' time.

"The Olympics has always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl," said a buzzing McMahon prior to the championships. "I put in all the hard work and I train every day for it. So hopefully it all pays off."

Pay off it did with McMahon securing the spot ahead of the final race due to being mathematically unbeatable for Olympic qualification, no matter the final-day result.

So Wednesday was a race for position, and despite missing one race due to a broken steering tiller on day four, McMahon finished in 20th place, well inside the required placings. It was quite the result for the 19-year-old who had secured the under-21 World title in October.

As the sole Irish contender in this class at senior level, McMahon's name will be submitted by Irish Sailing to the Olympic Federation of Ireland for inclusion in the Olympic team for Paris 2024.

McMahon's result means that all three events in Irish Sailing's senior team will be represented in Marseilles for the Olympic regatta after Rio 2016 veteran Finn Lynch secured a berth for the reciprocal men's single-handed event (ILCA 7) at the 2023 World Championships in August. In November, Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove qualified Ireland a spot for the men's skiff event.
