Great Britain announces rowing squad for Paris 2024
The British Olympic Association (BOA) has announced its official rowing squad for Paris 2024 which will feature 42 rowers, 23 women and 19 men, with exactly half the squad making their Olympic debuts.
“Team GB has an impressive Olympic tradition in rowing, and I am delighted to welcome the 42 rowers that have been selected today for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” said Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England in a press release on Wednesday 5 June.
Historically, Great Britain has thrived in rowing, winning 31 golds at the Olympics. In fact, it was the only sport the nation won gold in at every Games from 1984 to 2016. However, during the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Britain finished only 14th on the rowing medal table, taking home one silver and a single bronze medal.
The silver medal for Team GB came in the men's quadruple sculls, the country’s first-ever medal in that specific boat class. The bronze came in the men’s eight and was the nation’s 14th medal in the event.
“The Olympic experience in this squad is huge, and I have no doubt it will be an asset to the 21 rowers who will make their Olympic debut in Paris this summer. Team GB is also set to include more women than men in the team for a second successive Games and it is fantastic to see two mothers, Helen Glover and Mathilda Hodgkins Byrne, named as part of the team today,” England added.
Britain’s roster is headlined by Glover, the two-time Olympic champion, three-time world champion and five-time European champion who captured gold, alongside Heather Stanning, in the women's coxless pairs during the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games. This is her fourth Olympic selection.
“Selection for my fourth Games feels different because the first time I still had this disbelief that I was becoming an Olympian! A huge reason for aiming for Paris was thinking how great it will be to have my family there to watch and support me and being able to share all of this with them is so special,” Glover said in Wednesday’s press release.
Tom Barras, who played an important role in the 2020 men's quadruple sculls silver medal finish, will also make the trip to Paris. He will be joined by another returning Olympian Sholto Carnegie, a two-time world champion for Britain in the men's eight.
The roster also features Team GB’s only brother and sister, Tom and Emily Ford. The siblings from Holmes Chapel in Cheshire participated in the Tokyo 2020 Games and have both had success leading up to Paris 2024. Tom won back-to-back World Championship titles with the men's eight and Emily took silver at both the 2023 and 2024 European Championships with the women's eight.
“Now, we have selected a very strong team of athletes with a good mix of returning and first-time Olympians who I know are relishing the opportunity to go out there and write a unique chapter in the legacy of the GB Rowing Team,” said British Rowing Director of Performance Louise Kingsley, who will be Rowing Team Leader in Paris.
