Denmark’s men’s handball team won Olympic gold as they eased to a 39-26 victory over Spain in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 final on Sunday, 11 August. They have now won two gold medals in the past three Games, taking gold at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020. The Danish team soared into a 21-12 first-half lead before scoring another 18 in the second to end their Olympic campaign with a place on the top of the podium.

Denmark was led by Mathias Gidsel, who scored 11 goals while missing just two of his shots. With this burst, he finished with 62 goals in the tournament and broke his teammate Mikkel Hansen’s record of 61 goals at an Olympic Games.

“It was the perfect day. Not only for me, personally, but for the whole team. Playing like this, beating Germany in a final, says how good we are. I’m really proud,” Gidsel said. “I didn’t know about that record of 61 goals. I was so far away (before the match). I was so tired that the only thing I was thinking about was getting through it the best way.”

For Germany, this is the nation’s first Olympic medal in men’s handball since Rio 2016, when they finished third, and first silver since Athens 2004.

“We came here to win a medal. I’m not going to say we came here for gold. We tried to win (gold), everybody tries to. But we have to be realistic,” said Andreas Wolff. “For us, it is a big and a huge success to have won this silver medal. We can build on this. We still have a very young and talented team. It was nice that we made certain progress.”

Earlier in the day, Spain won a tight game against Slovenia to win bronze, with the final score 23-22.
