Alex Morgan blasts USA past Haiti as CONCACAF W Championship gets underway
The Olympic champion and Women's World Cup winner hits the target twice in the opening half as the United States collect three points to start the two-week, eight-team tournament in Mexico.
Alex Morgan bagged a first-half brace as the United States opened their CONCACAF W Championship campaign with a 3-0 win over Haiti on Monday (4 July) in Monterrey, Mexico.
Morgan struck twice within a space of seven minutes, first heeling home a right-wing cross from Mallory Pugh on 16 minutes and then glancing in a header from the heart of the box to put USA up by two.
Margaret Purce came off the bench at the break to seal the Group A victory six minutes to time.
Eight teams are split into two groups at the W Championship. The top two in each group qualify for next year's FIFA Women's World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
The winners of the W Championship also qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Vlatko Andonovski's side next face Jamaica on Thursday. Jamaica on Monday edged hosts Mexico 1-0 in the group's other game.
Haiti have never qualified for an Olympics or a World Cup.
