People’s Republic of China’s Xie Siyi defended his Olympic title in the men’s 3m springboard final on Thursday, 8 August with near-perfect form to become the first man to clinch back-to-back gold medals in the event since Ni Xiong in 2000.

With four dives down and two to go, his teammate and eventual silver medallist Wang Zongyuan, who had held the lead for most of the competition, made a small error on his fifth dive. Siyi then built a 15-point lead, knowing that error-less dives would win it.

With an inward 3.5 pike somersault and forward 4.5 tuck somersault concluding his competition, Xie reminded everyone just why he held the title of Olympic champion in the first place. He posted a final score of 543.60.

Although the gold and silver by the two men repeated the same podium from Tokyo 2020, it was not the result that most expected. Siyi stepped away from the sport for two years after Tokyo, completing a master's degree and then getting married in 2022.

While he did this, Wang went on to win the 3m springboard at every single World Championships between Tokyo and Paris and solidified himself as the favourite for the gold when he dominated the prelims and semifinals, finishing 32 points ahead of Xie in the latter. His final score from 8 August was 530.20.

“I never stopped thinking about understanding and analysing diving…I discovered I (still) love diving," Xie said in a 2023 interview.

With the gold, China has officially taken the top spot on the podium in every single diving event in Paris thus far and with just two events to go.

Mexico’s Osmar Olvera Ibarra put on a superb show to secure the bronze medal and will stand on the podium with a final score of 500.40, after failing to make the finals in Tokyo.

“Historic” is how Ibarra described landing on the podium for Mexico’s first medal in the event since 2000.

“I’m happy about everything that happened in this final. I’m happy about the medal. The Olympics was one of my goals. I knew we could do it…The sky is the limit for me.”
