Akhmed Tazhudinov pinned Givi Matcharashvili midway through a dramatic first round to win men’s wrestling 97kg gold at the Champ-de-Mars Arena on Sunday 11 August.

The Bahrani registered a devastating victory in the Paris 2024 final, stunning the Georgian to make short work of the gold medal match.

“I had a year of training, and I was very focused,” Tazhudinov said after the fight, before thanking his team who supported his journey to Olympic gold: “Without my coaches and everyone else supporting me, I wouldn’t be here.”

In the first bronze medal match earlier in the day, Magomedkhan Magomedov of Azerbaijan beat Ukraine’s Murazi Mchedlidze.

"It wasn't a real feat for me, but I came here, I won a medal," said Magomedov "That's at least something, and I'll go back home."

Amirali Azarpira of the Islamic Republic of Iran took the second bronze, defeating the USA’s Kyle Snyder to end the U.S. athlete's desire of completing the Olympic medal set, following his gold at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020.
