2024 US Open championship preview: Full schedule and how to watch golf major action live
Defending champion Wyndham Clark will battle it out against several of the golf’s top players for the 2024 U.S. Open – the third major of the season – at the Pinehurst Resort's course No. 2, North Carolina from 13 to 16 June.
Clark held off Rory McIlroy to win his maiden major championship by a single stroke in the 2023 edition of the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.
The four-round stroke play event will feature some of the best players in the world including world number one Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka – the last man to successfully defend the U.S. Open title.
Reigning Olympic champion Xander Schauffele will be among the challengers following his first Major victory at last month’s U.S. PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.
Three-time U.S. Open winner Tiger Woods will also be teeing up at Pinehurst after earning a special exemption for the tournament.
Scheffler, who finished third at last year’s U.S. Open and won his second green jacket in three years at Augusta National, will be on the hunt for a career third major. He came painstakingly close to winning the 2022 US Open at The Country Club finishing a stroke short of champion Matt Fitzpatrick.
Other contenders include Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Hideki Matsuyama.
Who is playing at the 2024 US Open?
The 156-player field for the US Open includes a list of exemptions as established by the United States Golf Association which include, among other categories, the winners of the US Open Championship over the last 10 years, the 10 lowest scorers and anyone tying for 10th place at last year’s edition.
The top-60 players and ties in the Official World Golf Ranking as of 10 June automatically made the line-up (if not previously exempt).
Both men's Olympic champion golfers are in the field with Tokyo 2020 winner Xander Schauffele still seeking a first major triumph, and Rio 2016 gold medallist Justin Rose, who won the US Open just over a decade ago.
