He was first called up for the national squad in 1947, at age 30, playing a total of 19 times. His greatest international success was winning the Olympic title in 1948, on a team that featured four more of his clubmates. Retiring in 1953, Lindberg had a brief spell at his club as manager. After being assistant coach of the national team during the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, he won two more Swedish titles as a coach, now with Djurgårdens IF of Stockholm. An amateur during his playing career, Lindberg held various jobs in his life, including plumber and police agent. He was the last member of the Swedish champions of 1948 to die, at age 92.
