Tom Jager won seven Olympic swimming medals and five gold medals. All of his golds came in relays. His individual medals were a silver in the 1988 50 metre freestyle and bronze in the 1992 50 metre freestyle. Jager was a pure sprinter, specializing in the 50 free, at which he set six world records. He won the first two world championships at that event in 1986 and 1991. His other major international titles came in the 50 free at the 1989 and 1991 Pan-Pacific Championships. His great sprint rivals were Matt Biondi, who beat him at the Olympics in 1988, and Aleksandr Popov (RUS), who won the 50 freestyle in 1992 and 1996.
