In 1958 Stanko Lorger, although competing for Yugoslavia, became the first Slovenian athlete to win a medal at the European Athletics Championships, when he placed second in the high hurdles. Lorger competed at three Olympics (1952-60), with a best finish of fifth in the high hurdles in 1956 at Melbourne, and was capped 41 times for Yugoslavia in internationals. He won title at the World University Games in 1957 and at the Universiade in 1959, Balkan Games titles in the 100 m in 1959 and the 110 hurdles from1953-61, and was Yugoslav champion in the 100 in 1952, 1956 and 1958-61 and the high hurdles in 1952 and 1954-62, plus indoors at 60 metres and the 60 metre hurdles in 1955-8. Lorger set five Yugoslav records at 100 m from 10.5 (1956) to 10.4 (1958/59/60), 10 in the 110 hurdles from 14.9 (1952) to 13.8 (1958) and 24.7 (1954) for the 200 metre hurdles. In 1958 and 1959 he was chosen as Yugoslavian athlete-of-the-year. Lorger later became a professor of mathematics and physics in Ljubljana.
